Island Krk
Croatia has 1185 islands, 66 of which are inhabited. The island of Krk is the largest of them, with an area of 405,78 km2, 38 km in length, up to 18 km wide at the widest points, its coast 189,30 km long. ?xml:namespace>
Krk can be reached from various sides: from the sea (by boat or swimming), from the mainland – because after the construction of the bridge, Krk practically became a part of mainland, and from the air, because Rijeka airport is located on Krk, near Omišalj.
For the largest Croatian island it is only appropriate to have the largest Croatian bridge – and not only Croatian. The length of the bridge its accesses is 1430 m, but what made it prominent is the 390 meter long concrete arch from the mainland to the islet St. Marko, which made it the largest bridge of its kind at the times of its construction. The arch beat the largest one until then, on the bridge in Sydney, by 85 m.
Krk is located in Kvarnerski zaljev (the Quarner bay), in the immediate vicinity of the city and the port Rijeka. Although it is located in the north, the Mediterranean climate gives it warm summers and mild winters.
Brave people with stamina can try even earlier, but the sea is pleasant for bathing from June to September, or even October.
The island of Krk has 1300 described species of flora, which by itself needn’t mean much, but if you compare this to the number of 1180 on a much bigger and better known island called Great Britain, as far as species of flora are concerned, they should swap their names – Great Krk and the Island of Britain.
Island of Krk, Torino ( Italy), Bordeaux ( France), Ottawa ( Canada), Minneapolis and Portland (USA), Hokkaido ( Japan), Harbin ( China) and Krasnodar ( Russia), are being on the 45th parallel or at the geographic latitude of 45 degrees north is what connects them. Cities on this parallel also share similar climate conditions. ?xml:namespace>
